Park is located where southernmost tip of Sierra Nevada converges with El Paso Mountains. Park protects significant paleontology sites and remains of 1890s-era mining operations; colorful rock formations in park served as landmarks during early 1870s for 20-mule team freight wagons that stopped for water; also site for a number of movies including The Mummy (1932) and Jurasssic Park.
