San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm (70 sq mi), one of three major wind farms in the state. Developed beginning in the 1980's; now over 4,000 turbines being operated by over 20 companies. Turbines range from 80-160 ft (24-49 m) tall, last 20-25 yrs, cost about $300,000 and $30,000 a year to maintain. Turbine blades range in length from 66-130 ft (20-40 m) or more. Compartments at top contain generator/hub/gearbox and weigh 30,000 to 45,000 pounds. Most turbines manufactured in Denmark. Output largely sold to So. California Edison under long-term contracts.
