White-handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar) baby and mother. Native to aboreal jungles of Asia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. Grow to 11-15 lbs. (5-7kg) and 2.5-3 ft. (.8-1m) tall. Among the most agile tree-dwellers; only apes that walk upright, holding arms up to maintain balance. Bear one young every 2-3 years; can live 20-25 years. Females known for their "long call" vocalizations, males for thier "whoop whoop" calls. Santa Barbara Zoo, CA.
