Goldfields and spring wilflowers carpet the hillside. Red Rock Canyon State Park, est. 1968, 27,000 acres (110 km2). Features scenic desert cliffs, buttes and spectacular rock formations. Park is located where southernmost tip of Sierra Nevada converges with El Paso Mountains. Park protects significant paleontology sites and remains of 1890s-era mining operations; colorful rock formations in park served as landmarks during early 1870s for 20-mule team freight wagons that stopped for water; also site for a number of movies including The Mummy (1932) and Jurasssic Park.
