Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey; also "Chickenhawk," though rarely preys on chickens. Eats small birds/mammals and reptiles. Native throughout most of North America; western Alaska and northern Canada to Panama and the West Indies. One of the most common buteos in North America. Grows to 1.5-3.5 lbs (690-1600 g) and 18-26 in (45–65 cm), wingspan 43-57 in (110 to 145 cm). Protected in Canada, Mexico and US by Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Has significance in Native American culture; feathers are considered sacred by some tribes and are used in religious ceremonies.
